BIOGRAPHY

 

Michelle EunYoung Song is a botanical artist and writer based in Seoul, South Korea. Working under the artist name “Michelle”. She is the first Korean Fellow of the Society of Botanical Artists (SBA) in the United Kingdom, one of the world’s most prestigious and long-established botanical art organizations. She works between Korea and the UK, maintaining a vibrant artistic practice and sharing her expertise through teaching at her studio 'L’Atelier de Michelle' in Seoul.

Observing plants as they change over time, Michelle captures their essence through both drawing and writing, believing that every plant has its own story—just like people do. She listens closely to these silent narratives, creating botanical portraits that reflect their unique character. Specializing in colored pencil and graphite works, Michelle values precision and detail, carefully selecting materials to best express each plant’s individuality and inspiration.

​In recent years, she has expanded her practice to include printmaking. She is particularly fascinated by mezzotint, a technique in which countless burrs are created on a copper plate and then scraped away to express light and shadow. This process has captivated her, and she is deeply dedicated to developing her work in this medium.

​

In her atelier, she cultivates a wide variety of plants, observing their seasonal life cycles and studying their intricate patterns. Her dedication to accuracy and storytelling through botanical art has earned her multiple accolades, including the Derwent Award and the Strathmore Award.
